Disappointed: The Beaver Den

Last year, while on a weekend camping trip, my dad and I discovered a Beaver pond.  It had two well developed dams and a beautiful example of a Beaver den smack-dab in the middle of that pond.

I took a few photos, but because it was the last day of the weekend and I had to return to work, I didn’t get a chance to just sit on the complex.  I’ve thought about going back over there and taking more photos and also of getting photos of the Beavers as well.

This is how it appeared last year.

With the den in the middle of the pond.

The following photos are what I found Friday morning.

The dam above and below the den has been breeched.

Leaving the den to look like this.

This is the opening to the den, which typically would be below the waterline.  So, for whatever reason, this Beaver complex has been abandoned.

Morgan Falls and St Peters Dome

20110701_123

A short drive from Mineral Lake on Mineral Lake Road, Morgan Falls and St Peter’s Dome hiking area had a challenging hike up to St Peter’s Dome and at the bottom had Morgan Falls.

The wide trail to Morgan Falls could accommodate wheelchairs, but it would be a rough adventure because muddy conditions in spots.  Morgan Falls is less than a mile from the parking lot and there is a five dollar trail fee, which I felt was worth it.

The roughly hundred foot high waterfall cascades down into the gorge where it collects in a small pool.

Then it plunges another ten feet or so to the gorge’s bottom.

The hike up to St Peters Dome can be rough going and isn’t a flat-lander’s hike.

These stones, for instance, provide a bridge across one of the creeks you cross on the way up.

The view at the top is spectacular and the forestry service claims you can see Lake Superior on a clear day.  It was too hazy when I got there.

Hiking Trails

Turning a corner on a hiking trail, I saw this Sandhill Crane taking a morning stroll.

On my way back I encountered this doe in about the same spot.

New Location

I had heard of a place, actually a lake.  This morning I went out to try to find a spot where I could take pictures from.  I took the camera along just in case I actually saw something to shoot.  I didn’t think it would be as nice of a place to shoot as one of the state parks, but when I got to the place and stepped out of my car, I could see deer moving along the edge of the woods.  Turned out the place has a lot of potential.

It had geese with nice scenic backgrounds.

Mallards can be fun to try to get pictures of also.

Wood Ducks too.

And the deer I saw when I first got there, she walked back up to me.  I was pretty well hidden and she didn’t see me until she was within twenty feet, and then she ran away.  But the place has something that will surely bring me back.

Have a good day.
