Odd Duck

IMG_5053a

One of the toughest things about taking pictures of wild animals is waiting for one to show up.  So, while waiting for an eagle to fly by, I began taking practice shots of the Mergansers, adjusting the various settings and trying to get better shots.

While taking practice shots of this particular Merganser, I noticed him acting kind of odd.

Usually the Mergansers float along with their heads pointed toward the water as they forage.  This one wasn’t.

He would splash around, sort of rise out of the water and then lay his head on his back.

Some ducks will sleep like this, but I couldn’t imagine what all the splashing was about if he just wanted to sleep.

That’s when I noticed him watching a group of other nearby Mergansers,

exhibiting the same odd behavior.  And then I noticed the duck to the far right.

So the reason for all this splashing and odd behavior?  A female Common Merganser.
