Pileated Woodpecker

IMG_8695a

I had just started my hike, when I saw this bird flying through the air.  I am a little disappointed that I didn’t get a better shot, but he kind of took me by surprise.

Later, as I hiked along, trying to locate deer, a large woodpecker floated through the air above me.  I saw the general area it landed in and headed back toward the spot.  I managed to get several nice shots of a Pileated Woodpecker.

This is the female of the species, notable because the second brown stripe below the eye would be red on the male.

So today I saw a Great Blue Heron and a Pileated Woodpecker, and about a half a dozen other birds I haven’t identified yet, including an interesting looking hawk-like bird.

Pileated woodpeckers are so cool – unlike their more famous but wholly unfit cousins.

Their wholly unfit cousins would be? Red Headed?
