Sneaking up on a Whitetail Deer

If you’ve spent as much time as I have trying to get pictures of deer, or hunting deer, you’ve been in situations where the temptation to try to get a little closer becomes too great.  In the photo below I spotted the usual suspects enjoying a tasty bit of grass – the first green food for these deer since winter ended.

With their heads down and the wind in my face; they don’t see me, hear me or smell me.  So I tell myself, I know I can get closer and get a really good shot of them while they’re feeding.  I know at the time that I can’t sneak up on a Whitetail Deer.  Why not?  Even when all the elements are in my favor?

Because one of them is always vigilant and looking out for the others, even when they’re hungry and have found a sweet meal after months of tree bark, acorns and pine needles.

The next thing that will happen at this point?  They will run away.
