A Very Windy Day

The winds on the bluffs Saturday gusted hard enough to buffet me around and also caused several birds who don’t care for humans at all to land very close to me.  This Turkey Vulture rested briefly in this tree near me, and several hawks landed within fifty yards of me.  Something I normally don’t see as these birds tend to shy away from humans.

Personally, I find Turkey Vultures repugnant.  Most days I don’t even like seeing them, but whenever I’m at Wyalusing State Park they soar back and forth in a never ending quest for food.  They cruise the railroad tracks at the bottom of the bluffs.  My guess is the trains either scare up a lot of food for them or kill a lot of food for them.

They ride the air currents back and forth, using the wind to carry them rather than actually flapping their wings.

They don’t even look very graceful, yet they manage to soar with the ease that most raptors have.

And when they spot something, they soar down to the ground and feast.
