White-tailed Deer: Driven

Last night, where I had been taking photos of the Northern Flickers, I had stopped at a spot which hunters would recognize as a funnel.  Funnels are a spot in the woods where deer will pass through because it is the only place for them to pass through.  In this case, a strip of sparsely wooded prairie bordered by two large fields.  I often stop here and wait to see if any deer show up.

I saw a couple slowly walking with their two children along the trail.  They stopped often and would watch.  They were over a hundred yards from me so I didn’t think they could see the flickers.  When I noticed some of the usual suspects step out of the woods and into the funnel area, I knew what had been holding their curiosity.

The deer have stepped into the funnel.  Whitetail Deer always check their back-trail.  Generally they will only run thirty or forty yards at a time.  In the photo above they check their back-trail by looking back toward the hiking family.

As more of them emerge from the woods, they noticed me.

And decided to push quickly through the open area to the relative safety of the woods on the other side.

While they gathered at the edge of the woods, wanting to run in there for cover, the lead deer did something I’ve seen them do before.

It stepped out onto the man trails and slowly hiked to the other side of the field.  Eventually the rest of the deer followed.
