Yellow Shafted Northern Flicker

Northern Flickers tend to be very shy.  Rarely am I able to get within fifty yards of them.  Last night proved no different as I hiked near dusk and spotted movement out in the middle of a field.

When I took these shots, I thought I had captured a pair of birds doing their let’s do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel dance.

With their heads bobbing and weaving they postured with each other while I took these photos.

Turns out I witnessed something more brutish.
