American Bison

When driving through the National Bison Range, the main attraction is, of course, Bison.  Americans mistakenly refer to them as buffalo.  They are not buffalo.  As far as I know, there are no buffalo in North America, but we have bison, which are only distantly related to buffalo.

Bison roamed North America in great herds numbering in the thousands, sometimes tens of thousands.  Most people are familiar with how they were hunted to near extinction as a way of depriving the Plains Nations (native Americans such as the Sioux and Comanche) of a valued food source essential to their survival.

Large mammals, bison can weigh more than 2000 pounds (900 kilos).  These bison are park animals and used to humans driving passed them in cars.  I was shocked with how close I could get to these animals.

I had to drive passed this female nursing her calf because I was too close and couldn’t get my telephoto lens to focus.
