Back Home

Having spent one weekend out, I’m back home.  Tomorrow I have an appointment with Jones Chevrolet to try to figure out why my trailer brakes don’t work.  Spent the weekend at Governor Dodge State Park, near Dodgeville, Wisconsin.  Saw a lot of Vultures, like the one pictured below.

I have camped and photographed inside Governor Dodge State Park many times.  Getting captures of deer, many varieties of birds and the occasional landscape photo, like the photograph of Stephens Falls which is part of a photo kiosk at the top of the falls.

The Beaver Pond

Yesterday, I mentioned  I saw a mother duck with her ducklings swimming on a beaver pond.  The first thing we noticed had been the the beaver’s home, which looks like a pile of sticks.

Other signs around the pond pointed to a beaver’s handiwork, such as gnawed down trees.

The dam, or dam complex would be more correct, has been there for so long that it has become overgrown with vegetation.

Here’s another shot of the same section of the dam…

Unfortunately, we found this dam late on Saturday.  The sun and I were not in agreement and the shots are mostly into the sun.  Here’s a shot of the section of the dam leading to the house.

I’ll have to go back some morning and setup near the dam and see if I can get some shots of the residents.

First Camping Trip This Summer

Camping has been a favored pastime of mine since, well, since a long time ago.  I camped at Governor Dodge this weekend.  Governor Dodge is a large park and I couldn’t possibly hike what has to be fifty miles of trails within the park in one weekend.  The weather was great, though, and I managed to stumble across some wildlife, such as a doe with her fawn and a mother duck with her ducklings swimming on a beaver pond.

Stephens Falls: Ice Formations

IMG_9818

Melting snow and water from a creek create these ice formations on the canyon walls at Stephens Falls in Governor Dodge State Park.

I still prefer wildlife photography, but the ice formations near Wisconsin’s waterfalls offer a unique winter perspective.

The lighting inside the canyon provided some unique challenges.

Stephen’s Falls

May 23, 2007 019

Stephen’s Falls in the Lost Canyon of Governor Dodge State Park.  The waterfall can be reached from a park road or from Stephen’s Falls hiking trail which branches off from Lost Canyon trail.
