Eagles in Yellowstone National Park

The Yellowstone River runs through the part of Yellowstone National Park where I stayed.  Being from Wisconsin where bald eagles are about as common as robins, I was surprised to see that a bald eagle got as much attention from the park’s tourists as the bears.

I saw both bald and golden eagles during my stay in Yellowstone National Park.

The one disappointment about the over 100 day trip was that I didn’t get a better shot of a golden eagle.

Golden Eagle: A Second View

I am always skeptical when someone reports seeing a Golden Eagle in Wisconsin.  Some very reputable sources have reported in local newspapers of seeing them along the bluffs of the Mississippi River and along the lower portion of the Wisconsin River throughout this past winter.  What ultimately sells this as a Golden Eagle for me is the eyes.  I have several good shots of this bird and the eyes are dark like a Golden Eagle’s, not yellow like an immature Bald Eagle’s.

Golden Eagle

Since Golden Eagles are not indigenous to Wisconsin, I have my doubts when people report seeing them.  On Saturday afternoon I got to see two of them and one of them flew close enough to photograph.
